Is our Community ready for a large-scale disaster with possibly extensive injuries and damage, and no phones? Let's practice!

BIG regional exercise covering everywhere from South Skyline to Half Moon Bay and the coast, including many towns, neighborhoods, fire departments, ARES, CERT,....

  • Activation of emergency radio communication and fire department Department Operation Centers (DOC) across area
  • Activation of local emergency medical resources

PARTICIPATE in South Skyline Area:
(For Half Moon Bay look
here, for La Honda check your SMC Alert)
Assume a 7.1 earthquake has hit the area just before the drill, and the phones are dead.

10am-11am:
Who? EVERYONE. We'd love to have every neighborhood in South Skyline do this.

Do a welfare check of your neighborhood by radio/phone/internet/in person.  Is everyone ok?

  • Get an assessment of people injured/trapped, active hazards (fire, utilities).
    • You'll want to report concisely on injuries, major damage/utilities, and specifically what urgent help is needed. Have some fun, make something up.
    • You can do this for all or part of your neighborhood, whatever you're comfortable with!
  • When sending messages, electronically or by radio, always start by saying "THIS IS A DRILL".
  • If your neighborhood has a plan for checking on everyone, use it!
    • If you don't have a formal plan, this is a good time to talk to your neighbors in advance and agree on how you would do this.
  • Once you've gotten your status, try communicating it. See bottom of this page for our Communications plan for this drill.
    1. In real life you'd try 911. Can't do that this time!
    2. If you are north of Highway 9:
      1. Use GMRS on LRRPT
      2. On Ham Radio try CMD31, or failing that  BLKMTN
    3. If you are south of Highway 9:
      1. On Ham Radio try CMD31.
      2. On Ham Radio try CASTLE
    4. No radio? (We're pretending no phone). You can send us an email!  As part of this drill we are experimenting with WinLink, a mesh system that allows emails to be sent by radio if there is no internet. For our drill, you can email your report to KD6UCA@winlink.org. The subject line of the email needs to be: //WL2K R/Drill Report: <neighborhood name> .   The code at the beginning allows the message to be routed by radio; without that it won't get received.  These messages will be delivered via a combination of internet and radio.  Right now this is just an experiment, but we'll come up with a permanent approach to this afterwards.
    5. For reference, the communications page outlines what you would try in real life.
    6. These messages will all arrive at the fire department DOC's. For this drill we will simply catalog responses, and understand what worked and what didn't as neighborhoods try and self-assess and communicate.

11am-1pm:
Who? All
CERT trained folks in South Skyline Area and anyone interested in medical response
Practice using the emergency
medical trailer at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve Parking Lot with Dr Rich Lee

  • We need more volunteers in our area to be knowledgeable about the trailer and our other medical resources. This is a great opportunity for CERTs to get involved in this.
  • CERTs please RSVP to info@ssepo.org. Given the Covid disruptions over the last year and a half, we need to get an updated list of anyone in South Skyline area with CERT training who's interested in participating. Even if you can't come, email us and we'll add you to the list.  There will be more South Skyline CERT events to come!
  • This is a community event, not a formal CERT activation.
  • Those of you also on La Honda CERT list, can choose which event you want to participate in.
  • If you live in the South Skyline area, even if you're not a CERT, we'd love it if you could join us!
